Electing the president
October 21, 2024

There’s much discussion regarding america’s democracy, however, America was not established as a democracy, but rather, America is a Constitutional republic. Each State in the union is established as a sovereign nation. We have 50 countries, each State with its own Constitution, and its own governmental structures. The US Constitution guarantees each State a republican form of government. We seem to have forgotten that it was the States that created the federal goverrnment. Therefore, the States are superior to the federal government.

It is important to keep in mind the reason for the Electoral College. We don’t elect a president on the basis of the popular vote because, to elect a president by popular vote diminishes the value of the people who live in less populated states and communities. The president is not the representatives of the people, but the president is the representativeof the States in relationship with other nations.

If the president were to be elected by the popular vote, then candidates would only need to concentrate on the largest population centers, and they could ignore rural America.

In the constitutional republic we have in America, the Legislative Branch is supposed to have superiority over the other two branches, but since the progressive era, it is the Executive Branch which has obtained the vast majority of “power,” and now goverrnment is run by the administrative “state.” This isn’t what the Founders envisioned, and so to offset the power of the Executive Branch, we need a strong supreme Court to counterbalance the Executive Branch.

So as we vote this year, we need to remember just how important each vote is. If we had a popular vote for president, those of us who live in less populated areas would have less of a voice in the selection of the president.
